TecMate is aware of the issues with charging the battery of the K1600. We do know this bike draws the battery down rather quickly, from dealer reports the battery can be dead within 2-3 weeks. We also confirm from our tests that the ZFE / CAN-bus system is different from previous BMW motorcycles. Present models of OptiMate 4 DUAL PROGRAM may not automatically connect, but will connect and charge if the ignition is turned on which turns on the 12V outlet. Unfortunately, if this procedure is used we cannot guarantee it will continue maintaining after the battery is fully charged as the CAN-bus system decides when the battery fully charged and will switch off the outlet. In this case you may have to turn on the ignition at least once a week to make sure your battery is properly maintained.
Alternatively, fit a 2nd 12V outlet that is connected directly to the battery. Find OptiMate accessories here. Our OptiMate Accessory TM71 and TM-78 together make up a kit with a 15A in-line fuse for protection against high current draw. For this alternative the OptiMate 4 DUAL PROGRAM should be used in the CAN-bus mode.

UPDATE: We have solved the automatic initialisation* issue for first generation of K1600 and all new OptiMate 4 DUAL PROGRAMs manufactured from Nov2011 onwards should have the new program in place (check date on charger, in format mmyy - look for 1111 or later). If your model is dated prior to this, we can provide the latest program update. Send your OptiMate 4 DUAL PROGRAM directly to us (our service centre in Belgium) or ask us prior to purchasing who has stock of OptiMate 4 with the latest program.
*NOTE: Initialisation means the OptiMate 4 DUAL PROGRAM automatically connects to the CAN-bus system via the 12V outlet. From reports in the field the K1600 will itself frequently disconnect the battery from the vehicle circuitry internally even though the OptiMate remains connected to the CAN-bus system. For a partially or fully discharged battery this does prolong charging and may exceed the 48 hour charging time allowed by the OptiMate 4 DUAL PROGRAM (48 hours). If your battery is not fully charged prior to connection, charge it directly first. For ease of direct charging see above accessory kit to fit a 2nd 12V socket.
